Horizon2

Queensland Government Funded Training

Funding Options

Horizon2 is an approved Skills Assure Supplier. Depending on your age, your work situation and what you have studied before, you may pay a small contribution or nothing at all.

Not sure where to start?

Each pathway has its own eligibility rules, approved courses and fee arrangements. Use this page to work out which one is likely to apply to you, then talk to us before you commit to anything.

  • School students pay nothing under VETiS
  • Apprentices and trainees under 25 may pay nothing
  • Everyone else contributes a subsidised fee
Funding Pathways

Find the right option for you

Entitlements

How your entitlements work across the programs

These programs are connected. What you use in one can affect what is left in another, and the rules are easy to trip over. This is the part worth reading before you enrol.

Apprenticeships and traineeships

  • You can complete a maximum of two government-funded apprenticeships or traineeships in any 10-year period
  • That cap is shared across all of these programs, including Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s
  • A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship uses one of those two
  • You can only be funded for one apprenticeship or traineeship at a time. If two training contracts are registered at once, the one with the earliest start date is funded

Qualifications

  • VETiS gives you one funded certificate I or II while you are at school
  • Career Start gives you a qualification typically at certificate III
  • Career Boost gives you one certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma
  • You cannot complete two general pathway qualifications under the same program

What does not count against you

  • Qualifications you completed as a school student
  • Foundation skills qualifications
  • Courses you paid for yourself or that were fee-for-service
  • Completing a DTET-funded certificate I, II or III at school through a general training pathway

School students, read this one

School students can only access a funded apprenticeship or traineeship through a registered school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. You cannot take a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship funded through Career Start while you are still at school. This exists so that you do not use up your whole entitlement before you leave.

Horizon2 is approved to deliver VETiS through the general training pathway only. If you are looking for a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, we can point you towards a provider approved to deliver one.

Key dates

Some of these programs have hard closing dates

These are set by the Department and cannot be extended. If you are considering one of these pathways, the date matters as much as the eligibility.

30 June 2027

Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s: apprentices and trainees must commence or recommence on or before this date to be funded under the program.

17 September 2027

VETiS: the last date a student can commence training. Students seeking to start between 18 September and 26 November 2027 need Departmental approval, granted at the Department's sole discretion.

30 June 2028

VETiS: all training and assessment must be finished. Any part of a qualification not completed by this date will not be funded, and no extensions are available. Enrolment requests for 2028 will not be accepted.

We will not enrol you into something you cannot finish

Under VETiS, we are required to satisfy ourselves that you can complete the whole qualification before the funding closes. If the timeframe does not work, we will tell you that up front and talk through the alternatives rather than enrol you and hope.

How it works

Your pathway to funded training

1

Check eligibility

Work out which pathway is likely to apply to you, then let us confirm it against the current rules.

2

Choose your course

Not every qualification is funded under every program. We will tell you what is available to you specifically.

3

Understand what you are using

Before you enrol we explain which entitlement you are using and when it will be exhausted.

4

Begin training

Once enrolled, you can commence your training with support from Horizon2.

FAQs

Common questions

Am I guaranteed funding if I enquire?

No. Eligibility depends on the program, your personal circumstances, the qualification you choose, programme availability and Queensland Government requirements. The Department can also change eligibility requirements at any time.

Do all funded students pay the same fees?

No. School students under VETiS pay nothing. Eligible apprentices and trainees under 25 pay nothing. Under Career Start and Career Boost, fees vary with concession status, pathway, nominal hours and the units you study.

I did a VET course at school. Does that use up my funding?

It depends what it was. Completing a DTET-funded certificate I, II or III through a general training pathway while at school does not affect your eligibility for Career Start or Career Boost later. Completing a subsidised school-based apprenticeship or traineeship does use one of your two apprenticeship or traineeship entitlements.

Can I be funded for two courses at once?

Generally no. You cannot be enrolled in another Department-funded qualification, even if it is on hold or deferred. Foundation skills qualifications and courses you are paying for yourself do not count.

Can Horizon2 help me choose the right funding option?

Yes. If you are not sure which pathway applies, call us and we will work through your circumstances with you before you commit to anything.
